Hazel Ellis

My Grandma Ellis made me take dance lessons when I was a kid.

She and I were never close, but that was the one thing we always did together that I had enjoyed. I’d been good—really good—because of all my fight training, and I’d enjoyed it.

I hadn’t attended a lesson or class since she passed away when I was sixteen, but riding on the back of Merrick’s bike, I missed it. Not because of my Grandma, though I did miss her. But because riding with him felt like dancing.

Merrick started at an easy pace, and the song began on the winding road. He leaned into a turn, and I moved with him. My body had to adjust to follow his, paying attention to his movement so I could mirror it without knocking us off balance or making steering more difficult for him. After a while, I figured out his pace. That was when the movements became more natural.

It was different from riding my own bike. There was a certain thrill and comfort that accompanied being the passenger instead of the driver. My body was cuddled to Merrick’s, the bike rumbling beneath us as I held my arms to the chiseled muscles of his stomach. I got to feel his abdomen work as he leaned, and got to smell his enjoyment of the ride.

I didn’t know where he was taking me, or if there was a destination at all, but I didn’t care. I watched the trees as we flew by, admiring nature’s beauty.

My wolf-heart loved the feel of the wind blowing my hair out behind me, and basked in the smell of Merrick mingled with me and the asphalt and the forest. His bike handled much differently than mine, but not in a bad way. I thought it suited his sexy-lumberjack look and personality.

He pulled off the highway after a while, and I was a little bummed when he slowed down. But the road began to curve as it wound slowly up a massive mountain, which was fun. I held more tightly to him, having to pay closer attention to his movements to keep us completely balanced.

He had good control of the machine, and I was confident he could hold us upright even if I leaned the wrong way, but I liked the feel of it when we worked together. There was something intimate about the way our bodies and the bike moved as one.

We’d been riding for a long time when we finally reached the end of the road. The small lookout spot where Merrick parked was near the top of the mountain. He didn’t shut the Harley off right away, letting it rumble beneath our thighs.

“What is this place?” I asked, releasing Merrick before I slid off the bike and walked to the edge of the lookout spot. Down below us, I could see Shifter City poking through the trees. The houses were in varying clumps, some of the clumps much larger than others. I assumed they were
